The Flower - Alfred Lord Tennyson

The Flower

Once in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower,
The people said, a weed.
To and fro they went
Thro’ my garden-bower,
And muttering discontent
Cursed me and my flower.
Then it grew so tall
It wore a crown of light,
But thieves from o’er the wall
Stole the seed by night;
Sow’d it far and wide
By every town and tower,
Till all the people cried,
‘Splendid is the flower.’
Read my little fable:
He that runs may read.
Most can raise the flowers now
For all have got the seed.
And some are pretty enough,
And some are poor indeed;
And now again the people
Call it but a weed.

One man's flower is another man's weed.

I guess he meant that we need to tend our gardens. If we don't then a beautiful flower can become a weed.

I'm with the weeds. They're tough, adaptable, and quite beautiful when they feel like it!

You are right Sandy. They do tend to grow unattended but a little bit of care makes them even nicer.:)

I like the poem. I guess it just goes to show that weeds -- like beauty -- is in the eye of the beholder.

People call dandelions weeds but I love them- I've always thought they looked like cheerful little spots of sunshine.
Glad I finally got a chance to stop by- I see you've been visiting my photography blog.

There are some 'weeds' that a really beautiful. Who decides what is a weed? I love the poem, did you write it? :)

Oh what a dope I am! Sorry I didn't read the title of your post or I'd have known who wrote the poem, it's not one I've read before. :(

Thanks guys. Daisies are my favorite flower and they are weeds that you find in nurseries. lol
I also like dandelions and aren't most perrenials from the wilderness?
We have one bush that sells here in the nurseries but you find so many in the wild and they bloom yellow in the spring. I took pictures of them and will put them on.Unfortunately I forgot what they call this plant.
The Mimosa is a fern like plant. They call her a shy fern because when you touch her she retracts. Now how does a fern know how to do that? Most of our medicines comes from weeds and the reason they are so strong is because they are allowed to be free to gather their own nutrients.
So wet and dark today. Hope the sun shines through
Have a good one:)

George:

This is very true.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If only we could all see the same thing.
Wouldn't life be grand:)
