See the Light

Usually I light a candle when someone I know or love dies.
It is a sign of respect for the life that we shared and also to help the spirit
find its' way on the next part of its journey.

In the past, many homes lit candles in the windows, for their loved ones
especially in wintry storms
so it can be seen from afar and help the weary find shelter for the night.

Candles play a significant role in our lives.
We light them for marriages, christenings, when we are short of electricity
in churches when we ask for blessings and forgiveness.
We light them for love between two people.
It projects warmth and beauty and really, speaks for itself.

It represents life, as it begins brand new and burns itself out.
This is why we say never to burn our candles at both ends cause then
our lives are shortened.

In public it represents a light ,before the people, so they recognise other
peoples kindred spirit and good deeds and kindnesses and pass them on to others.

What a world it would be, if it was all lit up in candles.?

The different colors are used for different meanings.
 White is always for purity.
Black for destruction of negativity and for healing serious illnesses.
Red for love health fertility courage and will power.
Purple for wisdom knowledge success power spirituality and divination.
Gold for divination.
Green for success ,wealth, health in marriage and employment and physical growth.
Blue for tranquility, harmony, peace, to lose weight and inspiration.
Silver for neutrality, meditation and reflection.
Yellow for happiness, intelligence, wisdom, change and energy.

Advent Candles have three colors, purple pink and white.

The first purple candle is for hope.

The second purple candle is for preparation, to get ready to welcome God, a voice
of one, calling in the desert promising that
everything crooked , will become straight and smooth.

The third candle is pink for joy. Angels sing for joy that Christ is born.

The fourth candle is purple for love.
For God so loved this world, he have his one and only son and who believeth
 in him shall not perish.

The fifth candle is white and called the Christ candle.
It represents the spotless lamb of God sent to wash away our sins and to die,
 so man could live.

What a beautiful way to speak for Christmas!!!

We usually start the Christmas season by lightening one candle on the advent wreath, the first Sunday before Christmas two on the second etc. It had been the use in Germany since ages, but now it arrives here too.

Thanks for the all the information about candles and their significance. Our church uses the Advent Wreath you described, and we make one for our home as well.

George I came across it and got excited about Christmas. I think I will make one for my dining room table and living room with fresh pine.

Akelamalu - I love candles too
But you always have to worry to make sure there is nothing around to catch fire.

Gattina - I think it brings with it a true meaning of Christmas away from the commercial aspects of it.
