Pieces of Eight

From the 15th Century to the 19th Century, Spanish silver coins or pieces of eight were used as legal currency. They were all made by hand and weighed about 1 oz.

The US used them till 1857 and they were like our dollar today.

What was interesting about them was that they could be cut into 8 pieces to make change as well as quarters.
So if you sold something for two bits it meant 25 cents or quarter of a dollar.

It's unbelievable that the American currency was based on that of the Spanish dollar.
Pirates popularized it by stealing it and traders carried them on their ships to Manila, England and China.

American coins were minted in 1792 but the Spanish coin was preferred until 1857 when it was outlawed.

People knew a quarter as two bits. A dime was a short bit
15 cents was a long bit.
50 cents was 4 bits and 75 cents was known as 6 bits.

N.Y, Stocks were sold in 1/8ths of a dollar until 1997.

Today if you tell someone something is worth two bits, you basically tell them it's worth nothing.

People do not know the history of coins but I think the history is interesting, especially when told by the pirates who fought for trunks full of pieces of eight and to this day it is considered good luck to hammer one into the front of your boat . Luck is probably why the Chinese give children red packets with gold coins on New Years.

So ahoy thar maties argh! argh! argh!
Don't ya be a tryin to cheat me of my two bits of ale nor stealin me treasure map to Captain Blackbeards' Island where he be hidin his pieces of eight.

It's Pirate treasure and pirate treasure it will stay.

:)

Three animals were having a drink in a cafe, when the owner asked for the money. “I m not paying,” said the duck. “I’ve only got one bill and I m not breaking it.” “I’ve spent my last buck,” said the deer. “Then the duck ll have to pay,” said the skunk. “Getting here cost me my last scent.”

A doctor had been attending a rich old man for some time, but it became apparent that the old chap had not long to live. Accordingly, the doctor advised his wealthy patient to put his affairs in order. “Oh yes, I’ve done that,” said the old gentleman. “I’ve only got to make a will. A business man called and had a question about the documents he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded him he needed a visa. “Oh no I don t, I’ve been to China many times and never had to have one of those.” I double checked, and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said, “Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express.”

FIFA WORLD CUP 2010

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!
A HISTORICAL WORLD VICTORY FOR SPAIN!!!!!!!
FINALLY!! FINALLY!!
We have a winner for the South Africa Fifa World Cup 2010!!
AN A. INIESTA GOAL
AT SOCCER CITY,
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Such a nerve wracking game it was between The Netherlands and Spain.
Such a tense game.
So many yellow cards.
So many chances to score.
So many fouls lol.
The referee was generous, considering many offenses were warranted red cards on both sides.

So many good soccer memories were made in South Africa in 2010 with
Nelson Mandela sitting in the audience for the final game.

We even saw US Morgan Freeman in the crowd.

Since one of my son's soccer trainers came from the Netherlands, we decided to cheer for them but it was clear from the start that the game would not be an easy one and for Spain it would be the first win ever.
The game went into torturous 2 x 15 min overtime for the fans all over the world, with the Netherlands down a man in the second 15 min overtime. For Netherlands it's a third time
world cup loss.

Well Done SPAIN!!!

Forbidden Love

Forbidden Love a Spanish Romeo and Juliet Tragedy

Lovers of Turiel were from the families of Marcillo and Segara.

The children, Isabel and Diego, grew up together and wanted to marry.
Diego could not afford married life, so it was agreed to hold off marrying Isabel for five
years, so he could amass some wealth. Diego left for sea and came back
a wealthy man,
minutes after the wedding of his beloved Isabel.
That night he came to her and asked her to kiss him because he was dying
She refused, being married, and saw him fall at her feet dead.
She told her husband who was infuriated she did not kiss him.
He was afraid to be blamed for Diego's death.
At the funeral, Isabel came in her wedding dress.
She kissed her true love Diego and fell over his body, dead.
They lie in Spain for all to see , a Spanish Romeo and Juliet Tragedy.
Although their hands seem to be touching, they are not, because after all, she was already married.

"You don't marry someone you can live with - you marry the person who you cannot live without."

Origins of Smoking

Smoking was introduced to Europe in 1550, by Francisco Fernandez, who brought tobacco to Spain.
Jean Nicot, French Ambassador to the Court of Lisbon, sent seeds to France and 26 years later
Sir Francis Drake and Ralph Lane also brought tobacco and seeds to England.

Tobacco belongs to the potato and eggplant family. It’s existence was known from around 300 BC.
There are around 60-70 different varieties of tobacco.

Migrating Mayas from Central America, introduced the art of smoking to North American Indians.
Indians used cohoba as hallucigenic snuff
Some swallowed smoke
Some made cigars
Basically it was a revered herb and used in every household as medicine against all kind of diseases, fever, plague, sores, wounds, chest and throat discomforts.

Jacques Cartier saw Iroquois inhaling smoke through elbow shaped pipes in 1545 but
they were in no way limited in shape as we can see from the above pics.
