This is a pilgrimage people take to get to the Cathedral of
Santiago de Compostela, located in Galicia , Spain.
It is believed Apostle St James is buried here.
People like to take it because they have a chance to meet people
discuss things and make friends.
The route is 1000 km or 625 mi which can be done in 6 weeks.
James was a fisherman believed to be the brother of John the Evangelist.
He was one of Jesus' closest friends and was said to have seen him after resurection
The Apostles were given areas to work in to spread the gospel
and James was given the area around Spain, where he preached before returning to
Jerusalem.
He was known as James the Just because of his virtue and because he died a
martyr after being stoned.
He was then carried down the coast and put into a stone boat and taken back to Spain.
Queen Lupa brought him from Padron to Arca Marmorica where he was placed in a tomb.
James was buried there with two disciples Atanasius and Theordore.
In the 9th Century, 800 years later, Pelayo, a hermit found the tomb and Spain was elated because she needed something to inspire the Christians. against the invading Moors.
This was when the pilgrimages began.
One route travelled began from Roncesvalles, Another from Seville, on the Via de la Plata All the routes are marked by yellow arrows.
Charlie Sheens' Dad made a movie about such a pilgrimage and how it healed him and made him whole again, after his son died. His son was going to make this journey and instead it was his Dad who made it for him. Lovely movie.
Interesting stuff. -------------------------
Housework was a woman's job, but one evening, Janice
arrived home from work to find the children bathed, one load of laundry
in the washer and another in the dryer. Dinner was on the stove, and the
table set.
She was astonished!
It turns out that Dave had read an article that said,
'Wives who work full-time and had to do their own housework were too
tired to have sex'.
The night went very well. The next day, Janice told her
friends all about it. 'We had a great dinner. Dave even cleaned up the
kitchen. He helped the kids do their homework, folded all the laundry
and put it away. I really enjoyed the evening.'
'But what about afterward?' asked her friends.
'Oh, that........... Dave was too tired.' xoxoxoxo
That's very much in fashion here to go to Compostela ! My neighbor's daughter's ex husband did that too and went off with another female pilgrim. Ever since we call Compostela the "compost" lol !
Gattina - This is something I would have loved to do when I was younger. But I don't think today I would make it 1000 kms. I'd have to take a scooter and attach to it a small trailer to carry things like clothes water, tent, camera etc.. things a back packer would take along with him.But what a nice thing to do to meet people, sleep overnight in hostels, share the same sore feet and hunger and eat with people you would never otherwise talk to in regular life.It would be an adventure for sure.
I went to Spain in High School, Costa Del Sol. I had no idea about this place then or the story of St. James. I wish I had, what an awesome place to see! I loved the joke, irony! Love Di ♥
Diana - yes live and learn. I think with internet people get to know a lot more of what's going on around the world. The hike looks like it takes you through places you would never find doing it by car. This in itself makes it special. Too bad you can't do it with a horse. That way you could make sure you reach the hostel where you spend the night.lol
Rob BEar - I would love to hear the stories. I am sure they would be worth hearing.I loved to walk and had I been a little younger I would do it in a heart beat. Wish I had known about it.
