I picked up this little Greek tragedy at Sues' Book Shelf.

I found with such a wide collection of wonderful books.
I picked up JK Rowlings The Casual Vacancy there as well
The regular price of it is around 36. 00 and I got it for 10.00.
To be sure I will be going back there.
So now I am reading two books at the same time.
In Antigone, Sophocles asks the question, which law is greater: the gods' or man's. Sophocles votes for the law of the gods. He does this in order to save Athens from the moral destruction which seems imminent. Sophocles wants to warn his countrymen about hubris, or arrogance, because he knows this will be their downfall. In Antigone, the hubris of Creon is revealed.
Antigone is one of three plays written in 441 BC by Sophocles, a General who fought against Samos.
The play argues against anarchy and the dangers of dictatorship and for individual rights.
What always impresses me is that issues never change.
They are always the same.
People keep fighting for freedom and we still can't find balance between freedom and anarchy.
Where can the line be drawn between the two?
It always goes back to religion and God who is above us all.
If it wasn't for him to draw lines for balance, people would not fear to live as animals,
without a conscience or care about right and wrong.
This is why I find it is important to keep reading these plays and old books, so man does not lose his way.

It really is a revelation to read plays from centuries past, isn't it? We think we're unique -- but the basic conflicts never seem to change. You're so right about the importance of reading works from antiquity to give ourselves the perspective we need in these times.
I read this so long ago, but I wished I had a copy so I could reread it again.

Kathleen I agree. We always think its all about us today but it's always been throughout time. Even the changes don't seem to stay long because they are wrong to begin with.
Lydia I like it because it has notes which explain the play before you read it lol
It also teaches the different ways democracy was applied and the way freedom was seen.
Rick these places are dangerous for me cause I could buy the whole store lol
My husband asks why not just get one book at a time.
I explain myself by saying if I buy two books at a regular store I will pay close to 50 dollars. For this price I can get 8 at the second hand book store. Thats how I justify spending so much money lol
but sometimes the regular store has such good bargains and you can buy them cheaper than at this store. I didn't find the book I went in to look for. Its 23 dollars at Chapters.
Is there any key to understanding Obamacare in that book? :-)

The key lies not in Obama care, which is a bad time to bring it in, but in staying healthy and taking responsibility for your life.
No one discusses doing that because its not popular. What I find bad about social health care is that people think its ok to get sick.So they don't take care of themselves, drink smoke, do drugs. It's ok if there are only a few people doing it but before long the list becomes heavy and just
socially unbearable to cope with let alone support financially.
